The all-new, completely redesigned Camry. Redefining the mid-size sedan.
The completely redesigned 2018 Camry is here. So what is the hype all about? How is it different from the 2017 Camry?
Joe Lorio from Car & Driver said it best: ”Relocating from major appliances to sporting goods. Really.”
Just look at it. No Camry before has had styling this strikingly beautiful, and it’s not all just for show either. The new Camry was rebuilt from the ground up as a longer, lower and wider car, giving it a lower centre of gravity and driving position. This results in an experience that truly feels athletically inspired. The available hand-painted black roof creates a sharp two-tone silhouette, a first in the mid-size segment.
Not to be outdone by the exterior, the interior has also been heavily overhauled. Step into the cockpit and you immediately notice the brand-new, 3-dimensional centre dash. Equal parts futuristic sleek and intuitive function, it features a 7” touchscreen (8” available) housing Toyota’s new Entune 3.0 infotainment system, with apps like the all-new smartphone-based navigation system, Scout GPS. High-quality, traditional knobs and buttons fall in familiar places for drama-free, easy operation. There’s also an available black and red interior in the XSE model.
The 2018 Camry benefits greatly from riding on its new Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA). While both engine sizes remain the same at 2.5L for the 4-cylinder and 3.5L for the V6, performance and fuel economy numbers tell a different story. While the 2017 Camry equipped with a 4-cylinder was capable of 178 hp & 170 lb-ft of torque at 9.8/7.1 L per 100 km in the city and highway respectively, the new 4-banger in the 2018 model improves in every measurement to 203 hp (+25) and 184 lb-ft (+14) at 8.1(-1.7)/5.7 L(-1.4) per 100 km. In XSE models, with its quad exhaust outlets, these numbers improve even more to 206 hp and 186 lb-ft. In layman’s terms, what you get is the most powerful non-turbo 4-cylinder in its class.
With even Honda forgoing the V6 in the Accord for a turbo-four, the ubiquitous 3.5L V6 remains in the 2018 Camry, but with even more impressive gains to show: 268 hp in the previous generation is now 301 (+33), while torque has jumped from 248 lb-ft to 267 (+19). Paired with a new 8-speed automatic transmission in all gasoline models, performance has jumped substantially and output is smoother than ever. The hybrid powertrain has also been redone, with a combined 208 hp and fuel economy numbers that have jumped from 6.3/5.8 L per 100 km to a staggering 4.9/4.8 L per 100km, courtesy of a lighter lithium-ion battery pack, like the one found in the Prius.
Where TNGA really shines in the 2018 Camry is in the driving experience, specifically, how refined it is. No matter what powertrain or trim level you decide to go with, the new Camry shows no signs of harshness that you’d expect from a car that looks this aggressively sporty. The new multi-link rear suspension helps the Camry stay planted and well-mannered even through hard corners and road imperfections. The new chassis is spectacular at absorbing road noise, keeping you in quiet comfort whether you are zipping around downtown Calgary or putting it in cruise control for a trip out of town.
Speaking of cruise control, all 2018 Camry’s come equipped with Toyota Safety Sense P, including Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, and Automatic High Beams. All Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control (for stop-and-go traffic) is also available on all XLE and XSE models. Backup camera is standard, while blind-spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert with automatic braking are also available.
You’re invited to come down and see for yourself how the new 2018 Camry compares to the 2017 version.
